본 연구는 조선총독부의 검열 실행이라는 한 축에 상응하는, 조선어 민간신문의 검열에 대한 대응이라는 다른 축에 대해 역사적 문헌연구를 통해 접근해 보고자 하였다. 지금까지 본격적으로 다루어지지 못했던 조선어 민간신문의 검열에 대한 여러 대응방식들을 검열당국자의 기록과 당시 신문기사 등을 통해 재구성해보고자 하며, 검열이라는 상황에 직면하여 조선어 민간신문사 관계자들이 이에 대응하기 위해 사용했던 여러 전략들을 층위별로 살펴보고자 하였다. 이를 위해 1920년대와 1930년대 초를 대상으로, 조선총독부 경무국 도서과의 검열기록과 <조선일보>, <동아일보>의 검열관련 기사, 당시 기자 및 검열관들의 회고록 등을 수집해 그 내용을 분석해 보았고, 일제의 검열에 대한 조선어 민간신문의 대응양상을 검열회피전략, 행정처분에 대한 대응, 신문지면을 이용한 담론적 대응으로 나누어 살펴보았다.　
　
This study examines historical materials in order to explore how the Korean private newspapers responded to censorship which was executed by Japanese colonial government. Few studies have dealt with the Korean private newspapers" response to Japanese censorship. This study analyzes newspaper articles of Dong-A Ilbo and Chosun Ilbo, censorship records such as The summary of Chosun Publication Police (朝鮮出版警察槪要), and journalists" memoirs in the 1920s and early 1930s. The Korean private newspapers used various strategies for responding to Japanese colonial censorship. They tried to avoid censorship by using letters, ‘OO’ or ‘XX’, in articles and self-censorship. When the administrative dispositions were imposed, the Korean newspapers had confronted those dispositions or conducted a movement for release administrative sanctions. They also made efforts to form discourse on freedom of the press with their editorials and articles.
